“Look with your heart, and you can live the beautiful life.” This is the main concept behind The Beautiful Life Festival. For those who haven’t heard of it, this annual event by Oyeah Media takes place in some of Malaysia’s little towns to showcase their cultural and scenic beauty.
In previous years, it was held in Johor Bahru and Sekinchan. This time, the Beautiful Life Festival 2018 will take place in the peaceful fishing village of Sungai Lima right next to Pulau Ketam, and it is set to be more stunning than ever.
If you think you’ve already seen everything there is to see in Sungai Lima, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that there are more beautiful places waiting to be discovered here. These are some activities to expect at The Beautiful Life Festival: Hey! Sungai Lima.
1. Watch a performance unfold upon the Stage on Sand
Did you know that in Sungai Lima, there is a beach that surfaces during low tide? One of the highlights of the festival is to ride out on a boat to a beach, where the sand forms a mysterious stage. There will be performances held on this unusual platform, with gorgeous sea views forming a dramatic backdrop.
2. Taste delicious seafood at the Coastal Fest
When you are by the sea, the seafood is definitely a must-try. The villagers are teaming up during the festival to prepare an authentic seafood feast for their guests.
While enjoying your meal, you can interact with the residents and local hosts at Sungai Lima, learn about their lives and listen to their local Hokkien songs.
Vegetarian food available upon request.
3. Rooftop Melody
Sungai Lima depends on their fishing industry, so on normal days the villagers would lay out their daily catch to dry under the hot sun, especially dried shrimps. In fact, they sometimes use the roof of a particular building to dry shrimps. During the Beautiful Life Festival, there will be a rooftop concert right here!
If you’ve watched the local film, Paint My Love (再見我愛你), you may recognise this as one of the settings in the romance film. The concert happens during the early hours of dawn, so you can enjoy the performances as the waves awaken the sea, and the sun trickles through the horizon.
4. Join in the Lanterns of Hope
By nightfall, watch Sungai Lima illuminated by gentle lights. The school children of Sungai Lima will partake in the Lanterns of Hope activity to make a wish and send beautiful lights across the village. This will happen while you are indulging in your seafood dinner.
5. Enjoy the Art Market and Other Activities During the Day
Some of the other special events happening during the day are the art market, an art exhibition, book fair, author meet and greet, workshops, and more. There will also be a photography exhibition that features snapshots showing the beauty of Sungai Lima through the eyes of the schoolkids from the village.
If you happen to visit Sungai Lima on a different day other than the Beautiful Life Festival, we suggest following in the footsteps of its village chief, who can show you around Sungai Lima and Pulau Ketam, share a delicious seafood meal, bring you to the fish farm and show you eagle feeding. Find it on LokaLocal.
6. Get a taste of the past
The local flavours at Sungai Lima have stood against the tides of modernity, and you would not want to leave without trying at least a few, such as fried cockles omelette and fried prawn cake. Brown sugar prosperity cake is one of its specialities, especially since it is prepared in the one and only bakery at Sungai Lima.
7. Sleep under the stars
Wouldn’t you like to spend a romantic night beneath the stars? Free from light pollution, you can set up a tent in the fishing village and gaze upon thousands of stars sparkling in the night sky.
Tents are given on a first come, first served basis, although you are advised your own sleeping bag, blanket and toiletries for extra comfort. For a chance to lay amidst the stars, you’ll have to be fast.
Moonlight Tent: RM120 per tent (fits 2 adults)
8. Or you can stay in a local homestay
If sleeping in a tent is not your style, then you can settle yourself down one of the local homestays in Sungai Lima. They are all equipped with shared bathroom, air-conditioning and water heaters.
Keep in mind that you will be living in a homestay at an authentic fishing village, so don’t expect hotel services! That said, you get to wake up to a stunning view right at your doorstep.
Backpacker’s Lodge: RM40 per pax
Homestay Rooms, Five-person Bedroom: RM350 per pax
All these are happening because of the Beautiful Life Festival: Hey! Sungai Lima. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime way of seeing the true heart of Sungai Lima, by spending a night in the quaint village and celebrating life with locals through genuine and heartfelt interaction.
