Being the first of its kind, Tian Kong Music Festival is set to give your ears (and heart) an unforgettable adventure. Held at SJK (T) Blue Valley, Cameron Highlands from 28th to 29th July, it’s time to indulge in the cool breeze, green fields and the melodious voices from its exciting line-up – here are the emerging artistes you should know about!
1. Waa Wei 魏如萱
Formerly a lead vocalist of an indie band Natural Q, Taiwanese singer-songwriter Waa Wei is a music producer, singer, actress, radio DJ, author and artist. With solo albums like La Dolce Vita, Le Hérisson, No Crying, You Lovely Bastard, and Run! Frantic Flowers, she was awarded Best Top 10 Albums by Chunghwa Musicians Association and Best Female Singer at the C-Pop Media Awards.
2. Ichiko Aoba 青葉市子
At only 19, Kyoto-raised guitarist Ichiko Aoba released her first debut album Kamisori Otome, gradually gaining more recognition in Japan ever since. To this date, she has 5 full-length original albums. She found herself collaborating with Japan’s legendary musicians such as Ryuichi Sakomoto, Haruomi Hosono and Jun Miyake, exploring the unbounded world of music.
3. No Party for Cao Dong 草東沒有派對
In the music industry where most people are afraid of speaking against powerful people, this Taiwanese indie post-rock band stayed true to their style, expressing their true feelings about society through their lyrics. This earned No Party for Cao Dong a strong following in their homeland Taiwan and across Southeast Asia.
Awarded Best New Artist and Best Musical Group in the recent Golden Melody Awards, this is the golden opportunity to catch No Party for Cao Dong live in Tian Kong Music Festival in Cameron Highlands, Malaysia.
4. Becky 楊碧琪
Becky Yeung from Hong Kong been dealing with depression since young. Over the years, she managed to find her escape through music with the help of her guitar and piano. With the dream of reaching out to help those in need with her emotional music, Becky took her first step by showcasing her talent at The Voice. Tian Kong Music Festival will be her next step in fulfilling her dreams.
5. MJ 周明駿
Malaysian artist and music composer, MJ loved singing since young, but grew up distancing himself from singing. He recently rediscovered his long-lost love for music, managing a relationship between his love to producing music and songwriting.
To him, music portrays much more emotions and thoughts than any amount of words can. So he went on to compose music for singers such as Jeslyn 古洁縈 and Candy 林冰冰. His first big gig will be at Tian Kong Music Festival.
6. Yingz 楊莉瑩
During her high school years, Yingz started singing in a restaurant. She then joined the Astro Star Quest singing competition, finishing at 7th place in year 2013. In year 2015, Yingz joined the charity concert “Music to Heal Nepal” with her first song, which led her to be a part of the MONSTER MUSIC record label.
She continued developing as an artist by performing for Mari Market (毛驢市集), Other tone Singer-songwriter Series #10, JUST PLAY Tour 2016, Hell Gate Art Fair II (鬼門關市集 ii), Good Times Music Festival (美好時光音樂節) and Musicsynthesis music festival (光合作用原創音樂節).
7. Amy 文小菲
From being a contestant in various Malaysian singing competitions, to becoming a TV star and a talk show host, Amy has always dreamed of having her own song album. Her dream was never fulfilled during her days at the record label, and now she is the founder and owner of Mun Tai Tai herbal drinks.
Still, she held on to her dream while building up her enterprise, and managed her first ever concert 初登場音樂會 organised by Eargasm record label. She was also invited as special guest to perform in Misi Ke’s Don’t Make A Sound tour and Matzka Music Festival. Brace yourself for her uplilting voice in Tian Kong Music Festival.
8. Diana 劉婉瑩
Born in Kuching, Diana Liu furthered her studies in Australia, and stepped foot all over the world to showcase her singing talent with her debut “Best of Diana Liu” and “Sunny Days”. Some of the music festivals she performed in include Borneo Jazz Festival, World Youth Jazz Festival, Taipei Brown Sugar, “Asia on the Groove” Concert Singapore, Sydney Opera House and several more.
Diana may be considered an all-rounder as she conveys her emotions through various music genres like jazz, funk, soul, bossa nova, samba and gospel. With a mixed elements of the East and West culture, Diana’s music will satisfy your inner wanderlust.
9. Jack 林尚奕
At the age of 11, this talented ukulelist has found himself performing at various platforms in Malaysia, California and Hollywood, USA with performers from all over the world. It seems that Jack is born with music in his blood as his ukulele playing is fully self-taught from Youtube, until recently he was invited to be guided by the founder of Manuel Ukulele.
Jack will be the youngest performer and the only one who performs both days in Tian Kong Music Festival, portraying his burning passion in playing ukulele.
10. Hsieh Ming-yu 謝銘祐
Experienced senior music producer and songwriter, Hsieh Ming-yu has produced over 2000 pieces of music across the world, for well-known artists such as Andy Lau 劉德華, Chris Yu 游鴻明, David Wong 黃大煒, Vivian Hsu 徐若瑄, Nicholas Tse 謝霆鋒.
He even has 7 albums of his own which awarded him several Golden Melody Awards titles over the years, including Best Taiwanese Award and Best Taiwanese Male Singer. Listening to Hsieh Ming-yu live in Tian Kong Music Festival is sure to stir your memories of the yesteryears.
11. Euseng Seto + Kent Lee 阿部健
Euseng Seto, also known as flica, combines ambient electronica and oriental mood in his music, or as he puts it, “an Asian sound with experimental element”. His music delves into deeper emotions by imitating sounds of nature through electronic music. Kent Lee is the bassist and lead singer of Britishpop influenced band “Fast Food Generation”. He developed a unique approach to bass playing that combines the innovative use of multiple effects with virtuoso technique.
Together, Euseng Seto and Kent Lee will bring you a series of impromptu ambient electronic musicat Tian Kong Music Festival.
12. ARVAN 阿爾梵
ARVAN has a music style which combines metal, rock and lyrical genres. The group of five consists of vocal singer Aki 黃淑惠, guitarist and singer Alu8, electronic guitarist Ah Lo, bassist Ken Chung and percussionist CY. This time, the band will feature a special guest, Ryota 凉太, a Japanese artist now based in Malaysia. He recently joined Jumuro Music, a famous Malaysian-based music record label, whose members have made possible several world famous numbers by artists like Wang Lee Hom, Della Wu and Christine Fan.
Recently involved in Little Taiwan Calling Festival Kuala Lumpur 2018, ARVAN will take you on a music journey with original pieces from their album Musicsynthesis (光合作用单曲计划).
13. Vianz & Shan
This pair of Malaysian sisters kick-started their music career after joining a Taiwanese televised singing competition Chinese Million Star (华人星光大道) back in 2012. Vianz and Shan practically grew up with music, with some of their signature works including the theme song for the famous Taiwanese drama series Aim High (22K 梦想高飞).
Now they have their own music academy at Vianz & Shan Music Studio, giving music lessons such as piano, guitar, vocal, ukulele and several more.
14. Shelhiel XL
Shelhiel is a pop artist, reality TV alumnus, a DJ, multi-instrumentalist, a rapper-singer, and now one of Malaysia’s most promising music producer. The Kedahan lad became well-known when 8TV’s Chinese language reality show The Ultimate Song introduced him to the mainstream Chinese market, made comparable with alpha pop stars like Jay Chou and Wang Lee Hom.
Recently, Shelhiel is partnering Leon Saphhire and Isaac Miranda, forming music band Shelhiel XL. Together, they will bring Tian Kong Music Festival to an XL scale!
15. Danny One 温力铭
Besides becoming the winner of Best Malaysian Performer Awards at the Golden Chinese Melody Awards (GCMA) in year 2014, Malaysian artiste Danny One has been in the entertainment industry for 16 years, as a radio DJ, TV host, singer, actor and music producer. He is currently a DJ with 988fm.
16. YinThong 陳穎彤
New in the entertainment industry, YinThong graduated as a jazz pianist, then moved on to singing at several open mic shows. She was also invited to perform at Other tone Singer-songwriter Series, Musicsynthesis music festival (光合作用原創音樂節) and DongTaiDu Music Festival 2017 – Dare To Act, mainly jazz and pop. She is currently working on her first ever EP.
Hailing from Malacca and Negeri Sembilan, this quartet started as an instrumental rock band, and recently moved down the experimental path. Ridzuan, Qauyum, Haziq, and Alvin proves that music does not discriminate, not even race and skin color.
With a new single released just few months ago. Loch is expected to release a full-length album in July. Tian Kong Music Festival will be their first live performance for their newest album!
This singer-songwriter first became well known as the composer for Taiwanese pop-queen Stefanie Sun’s 2014 hit track, Kepler. He decided to venture onto the center stage as the frontman of the indie band with his stage name HUSH.
Going solo in 2015, the master of metaphors uses music to touch on social issues and his life experiences, as seen in his first solo debut album Monopoly.
19. Wee 陳漢偉
Being born to both opera-singing parents, it is no wonder Wee can create a distinct style of pop music in his first ever album Traveller (旅人). From joining televised talent competitions, to learning music editing, to joining various singing competitions and open mic shows, he dreamed of having his own full-length album, in which he fulfilled by releasing Traveller (旅人) in year 2016. To Wee, life is a journey, and music is one of the way to celebrate the different aspects in this journey.
