1. Chee Wan Restaurant

Must Try: Lai Fun Noodles

Lai Lai lai, this is one of the best places to get delicious Yong Tau Fu in Gopeng. Established for 30 years, their Lai Fun filled with nostalgia for people in the area. The noodles are smooth, slippery and goes well with the clear broth.

It costs only RM1.80 for a small bowl, and you can top up 50 cents to upsize the lai fun. Yong tau fu is only RM1 per piece, and we recommend getting the square tofu and shar kok. Come here for breakfast or dinner cause they wont be open on lunch time!

2. No 15 Curry Laksa

Must Try: Curry Laksa

This hidden gem can be found in the morning market at Gopeng. They have been serving for 28 years! The curry can be served in soup or dry version, along with a variety of noodles, such as Gopeng Mee, Mee Hoon, Lai Fun and Kuey Tiaw.

There are, of course, different types of handmade Yong Tau Fu you can eat it with. You can also enjoy a good old bowl of traditional Lai Fun noodles with clear broth, if you prefer something lighter. It costs around RM 1.70 for the base and RM1 per piece of yong tau fu.

3. No 13 You Tiao (Signboard reads Pork Mee, Pan Mee, Seafood Mee)

Must Try: Youtiau & Red Bean Bun

This stall in the Gopeng Market sure stands out, as they do not sell any noodles at all, despite its name. In fact, they have been selling You Tiau and Red Bean Buns for over 10 years.

Once a noodle shop, the family decided not to change the name after taking over. Instead it is easily spotted in the morning with the uncle rolls out the dough and cooks these traditional Chinese pastries on the spot.

You Tiao and Red Bean Buns are a great choice for a light breakfast, and even better when enjoyed with coffee. Better yet, everything is only RM1 each.

4. No 18 Chicken Rice, Chicken Porridge

Must Try: Chicken Rice & Chicken Porridge

This 30-year-old stall prepares and sells their signature dishes fresh every day. We went for a bowl of the steaming porridge, of course, along with steamed chicken.

What makes it special is the handmade sauce that goes with it. sauce that is made in-house.

5. Wan Ton Mee @ No 20 Wan Ton Mee

Must Try: Wan Ton Mee

Wan Ton Mee is a classic breakfast dish you can get at the Gopeng Market. No. 20 Wan Ton Mee is run by Ah Zhen who has been selling her locally loved dishes for around 30 years, and is still going strong.

You can order from several varieties including BBQ pork, wan ton, mushroom with chicken feet, and more.

6. No 8 Kook Fun Noodles

Must Try: Lai Fun Noodles

This Lai Fun shop is legendary as it has been in the business for 50 years. Served in anchovies soup, the noodle is smooth and delicious, along with fish balls, turnip cakes, bean curd skin, and fish cakes.

The owner of Kook Fun took over the business from her mother in 1983 and has since added varieties such as assam laksa soup, curry, and kicap. Their bestseller is still the good ol’ original Lai Fun.

7. No 53 Noodles

Must Try: Don Don Noodles

Run by a couple for over 20 years, this noodle shop sells all kinds of noodles, from Tom Yam Yee Mee to Curry Mee, Fish Noodles, Udon Noodles, Prawn Noodles and Bittergourd Noodles.

For a throwback to the past, try the Don Don Noodles, which are slightly more transparent with a springy texture. Children back in the 80s would remember Don Don noodles!

8. No 46 Gerai Minuman Lim’s Brother

Must Try: Hot Coffee

Opened by the Lim brothers, this little beverage shop in the Gopeng Market caters to early risers looking for the first dose of coffee of the day. The business itself has been in operation for over 16 years.

They have all the classic kopitiam drinks, from coffee to Milo, Nescafe and tea. Go for the hot coffee – it has that strong, traditional flavour!

9. Coconut Stall (Next to Restoran RS)

Must Try: Coconut Drink

Stay hydrated with a refreshing drink at this coconut stall, cause we all know how hot Malaysia can get! The uncle will cut the coconut open upon order so you can enjoy the coconut juice, which only costs RM3.50 per coconut. You can also get sugarcane for about RM2.

10. Hup Teck Soy Sauce Factory

Must Try: Soy Sauce

Hup Teck Soy Sauce Factory is one of the most familiar names in Gopeng. The family has been making their iconic soy sauce using traditional methods for close to 90 years!

As you walk into the compound, you can see pots and pots of soybeans being fermented. The smell is intoxicating. Talk to the uncle nicely and he may even open up the pots and share a thing or two about the process of soy sauce making. The soybeans are fermented for 3 months, following which each pot can produce four batches of intensely flavoured sauce.

If you are looking for a souvenir in Gopeng, you can get a bottle of soy sauce home. There are also other types of products made from soy beans such as soy sauce, black soy sauce, bean paste / miso, vinegar and black vinegar.

11. Cendol @ Cendol Sami

Must Try: Cendol

Don’t be surprised if Uncle Sami speaks to you in Hakka, as that is how he has been serving his customers for over 23 years. Sami and his family are familiar faces at Lawan Kuda, Gopeng. They start selling cendol from 12pm until they are out of stock – and they can go pretty gast!

One bowl of cendol costs RM2.20, with the option of additional toppings for 30 cents. Everything is homemade, sweet and absolutely inviting on a sunny day.

12. Lai Fun Noodles @ San Lun Che

Must Try: Lai Fun Noodles

If you are in Lawan Kuda, Gopeng, you would not want to miss this. Tucked within a food court is this popular Lai Fun stall. Back in the day, the owner’s mother would sell the rice noodles on a tricycle, which is why it is called “San Lun Che” or Tricycle.

Business is pretty good and they can sell an average of 80 bowls of lai fun a day! Their Lai Fun noodles are silky smooth and tastes good with the clear soup, and even more so when you add some of their many handmade Yong Tau Fu.

13. Kheng Bee Hainanese Coffee Shop

Must Try: Ice blended White

Kheng Bee Hainanese Coffee Shop is a well-known kopitiam in Kopisan, Gopeng. They have been serving coffee and other kopitiam favourites since 1966 – that’s an astounding 54 years! They are now run by the third generation of the Chen family.

Their dishes are just as impressive as they are delicious. One of these is the Glutinous Rice with Hainan Kaya which reminds us of Thai sticky rice but with their homemade kaya. They also serve a range of Hainan-style toasts, both classic and innovative. There are also other breakfast dishes like century egg porridge, nasi lemak and fried bee hoon.

The drinks at Kheng Bee are also well worth a taste. One of our favourite is the ice blended white coffee, a local inspired drink that touches our millenial tastebuds. Another interesting drink is the coffee with pandan which adds a aromatic mix.

14. Fei Kee Restaurant

Must Try: Hakka Pork & Fish

For over 40 years, Fei Kee Restaurant is one of the go-to places in Gopeng for Chinese cuisine. Despite selling many types of dishes in the shop, their Hakka Pork with Yam stands out as it is a mixture of different cooking styles. You should also try their Steamed Fish with Black Beans, cooked using a traditional recipe.

15. Gaharu Tea Valley

Must Try: Agarwood Tea Noodles, Agarwood Tea & Agarwood Ice Cream

One of Perak’s more well-known attractions, Gaharu Tea Valley is an agarwood plantation at the edge of Gopeng with over 200,000 of these endangered trees. Due to its cultural significance and historical richness, the agarwood is highly prized, hence it is protected by what locals sometimes call “The Great Wall of Gopeng”.

You’d expect the food here to have some form of agarwood. For something filling and flavourful, there is the agarwood tea noodles, which is cooked with local spices. You can also sample agarwood tea at the gallery, or treat yourself to a unique agarwood ice cream.

Apart from its food, there are plenty of attractions on site, from Tree Hugging areas, to panoramic vantage points and interactive murals.

Adeline Villa and Resthouse started off as a stopping point for food in the hills of Gopeng. Today, travellers come here for a retreat in nature and even more so for their mouthwatering food. Every day they prepare local dishes including Perak favourites, from nasi lemak to asam laksa, salted baked chicken, apam balik, pie tee, barbeque, homemade tau fu far and more.
