Supper clubs are all the rage around the world, even little state of Penang, Malaysia. The best part about these is not just being able to taste food that is dear to their hearts, it’s all about the stories and culture they share. Here are some private dining experiences in Penang hosted by locals in their very own homes.
1. Nyonya Supper Club in George Town
Edward and his family are Peranakans who have been living in Penang for generations. Their home, in fact, is a humble pre-war building that has been around since the 1930s, filled with gorgeous antiques from yesteryears. Every Wednesday and Saturday, they open their doors for guests eager for a taste of local food with a twist, all prepared by his dad, Chef David.
What’s fun about this supper club experience is that each session is different and pleasantly surprising. The dinner begins with a starter of popiah (fresh spring rolls) with vegetables, tofu slices and stir-fried turnip, which you can roll on your own. The main dishes vary depending on the fresh ingredients available that day, as well as the chef’s inspiration. On our last visit, we had chicken curry, stewed fish, butterfly pea rice and local kuih with fruits. Not only is the food delicious, Edward and David entertains their guests with stories about Malaysian culture. You’ll want to be back for more!

2. Oriental Private Dining in a Vintage House, Tanjung Tokong
If you’re looking to enjoy a traditional Chinese meal in an atmospheric fishing village, Steven’s private home dining experience worth a taste. His home at Tanjung Tokong is furnished with antiques for a glimpse of the past in his neighbourhood in Penang. Close by, there is the Thai Pak Koong Temple, the oldest Taoist temple in George Town.
The meal is prepared by Madam Tang, who sources all her ingredients from the morning market. For dinner, you’ll be served two local dishes and a soup of the day, along with homemade desserts and oriental tea. We can vouch for the chicken curry – it’s good!
