14 APRIL 2020 – LokaLocal has launched Online Experiences for people to connect with locals and experience Malaysia from home, through online classes and webinars. The move can also offer income to hosts who have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
This comes as part of their initiative called Homesick for Malaysia. In a time when people are staying home and are unable to travel, the platform reminds everyone that Malaysia, be it her places, food, culture and people, will be ready to embrace them when the crisis is over.
Meanwhile, people from around the world would be able to access LokaLocal experiences hosted by passionate Malaysians. When an activity is booked, guests would be given a video link to join the class or virtual tour on the day of the experience.
Unlike other platforms that mainly focus on eateries and restaurants, LokaLocal’s tech-based solution provides a way for local tour operators and workshop owners to continue utilising their skills and earn some income.
“Since the start of the Movement Control Order, tourists are not allowed to enter the country and people must stay at home. Local businesses who rely on tourism have taken the biggest hit,” said Chin Yoon Khen, CEO of LokaLocal.
“Taking our experiences online gives guests a chance to experience Malaysia at home. The beauty of Malaysia goes beyond the destination; it is the locals that make it unique. This is why we are connecting people, through a different lens.”
Among these experiences, you can:
- Learn how to prepare Nasi Lemak and Chicken Rendang with the assistant of Chef Wan, Malaysia’s celebrity chef
- Enjoy a virtual visit to Kampung Baru, the last remaining village in Kuala Lumpur
- Pick up a new skill in music with a kalimba music instructor or a ukulele instructor
- Discover your personal health programme in an Ayurveda session with a diet and lifestyle coach
With the extension of the movement control, LokaLocal’s regular experiences have been put on hold for the safety of the community. In the coming weeks, guests can expect more Online Experiences to be included in the website.
LokaLocal is also opening applications for local exerts who would like to list their Online Experiences. Send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org for enquiries.
For anyone who has to stay home, it is time to pick up a new skill, try something different and virtually experience Malaysia!
