LokaLocal launches 100 Experiences in Penang – now travellers can explore the state like a local

GEORGE TOWN, 30 SEPTEMBER 2019 – Malaysian travel marketplace LokaLocal launches 100 Experiences in Penang to show the world that there is more in the state than meets the eye.

Visitors to Penang will be able to enjoy popular attractions and unique local experiences hosted by locals with interesting stories and skills.

Through the LokaLocal website, those interested in the state’s world-famous food can book cooking classes, supper clubs and food heritage walks in George Town. Inner artists can also learn a skill in a creative workshop, or explore traditional crafts such as Peranakan shoe beading, joss stick making and traditional wood carving.

Beyond the city centre, adventurous individuals can discover the natural beauty of Penang on guided hiking trails at Batu Ferringhi or Penang National Park. Cycling tours, farm visits, camping activities and ATV rides are other activities available in Balik Pulau. Meanwhile, the understated Penang mainland welcomes visitors to a number of village homestay experiences, as well as a firefly cruise in Nibong Tebal

The 100 Experiences in Penang campaign is part of a national initiative in support of Visit Malaysia 2020. It will cater to the rising demand for experiential tourism, especially among a tech-savvy generation. According to Google Temasek, 41% of total travel bookings were made online in 2018, and is expected to increase to 57% by 2025.

LokaLocal will highlight stories on the people and places of Penang to attract millennial travellers who choose their destinations based on community recommendations and content.

“In a digital tourism landscape, travellers are more likely than ever to rely on engaging photos, stories and videos to plan their next vacation. LokaLocal focuses on building our own content to facilitate visual decision making,” CEO of LokaLocal Chin Yoon Khen said.

Established in 2016, LokaLocal is the largest experienced-based platform in Malaysia with over 500 tours and workshops. LokaLocal also works with event organisers to highlight festivals in the nation and introduce a different local perspective to visitors. Through the platform, hosts are able to earn an extra income while promoting their traditions, hometowns or hobbies.
