The perfect full day excursion for those who wish to wander and explore the Temenggor nature reserve in a single day.
Due the easy & short trek, this excursion is accessible to all ages.
The Temenggor nature reserve is located at the lower part of Belum-Temenggor forest complex. Although the rainforest is a single, contiguous ecosystem and there’s no biological difference between the upper Belum and the lower Temenggor, the areas are regulated differently. For visiting Temenggor you won’t need entry permits and thus entering this area will be less expensive.
Meet your local nature guide at the Pulau Banding jetty and start the cruise on motor boat.
Given the ubiquitous lake that imbues most of the forest there, your adventure will start on boat. Cruising the lake is, a great experience that can deliver splendid memories of unique landscapes of the tropical rainforest vegetation. Then, while going from one spot to another, you will also participate in many activities off water too. Part of the itinerary includes of course jungle trekking.
It will be a easy & short trek, and therefor this excursion is accessible to all ages.
First stop for a short trekking to attempt to spot the Rafflesia (flower blooming cannot be guaranteed).
You may have chances to spot the famous Rafflesia flower. The Rafflesia is one of the biggest flowers in the World and a plant with very peculiar characteristics and life cycle. They follow irregular patterns. Therefore, it’s hard to predict when there are bigger chances to see the flowers open and fresh. However, it certainly won’t be the only natural attraction you will get to see on your path. So prepare to be amazed by the richness and diversity of the rainforest and its enormous variousness of plant and flower species.
Trekking at Sira Gajah salt lick following the elephants' trail.
After this, the boat will move again towards an area locally known as Sira Gajah. This is the location where animals gather – mostly elephants (Gajah means elephant in Malay language). The area has different spots known as “salt licks”. These are natural dry mineral deposits that play an important role in the diet of many animal species. Especially for the Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). You will trek along the pachyderms trail and learn more on their habitat and life. Spotting elephants is definitely possible in Belum Temenggor. Bu,t it is a rare event as these animals are shy and will try to stay away from human crowds. In the remote eventuality of an encounter, you will have to follow strictly the nature guide’s instructions and remain quiet.
Third stop to visit the natives' village at Kampung Taruk.
After the salt lick you will proceed to visit an Orang Asli village, called Kampung Taruk. This village is located nearby a jetty, which they use as a small trading outpost. The Orang Asli groups of Belum Temenggor live of hunting, fishing, gathering herbs and other natural resources. Then, they trade with the outside for items and goods they need in their communities. If you wish so, as a sign of appreciation for their hospitality and visiting their village, you can offer a present in the form of useful household items, food or clothing.
Relax & enjoy Taruk waterfall. You can take a bath in the waterfall pool and have your packed meals there before returning back.
The last place you will visit in your day excursion, will be *Nam waterfall (Please read our notes). To get to the waterfall it’s necessary to trek for another 20 minutes along the Sungai Nam (river Nam) and crossing three small streams. During the wettest months, the water can get a bit higher so your feet and lower legs could get wet. Once you reach the waterfall, you can rest by the area, relax in this unique place surrounded by the silence and beauty of the rainforest. You can take a bath in the natural pool if you wish so, and then take your packed lunch here. After that, you will return back to Pulau Banding.
