Ipoh Heritage Trail
Start the heritage trail in old town of Ipoh and get to know interesting facts about this old mining town, a brief story about its colonial times, how it became the capital city of Perak state and the emergence of the famous “Concubine Lane.”
Traditional Pastry Shop
We will stop by a traditional pastry shop known for their fresh daily made "Heong Peng", which literally means “fragrant pastries”. These pastries, which resemble slightly flattened balls, contain a sweet sticky filling made from malt and shallots, which is covered by a flaky, baked crust and garnished with sesame seeds on the surface. This is probably one of the last remaining bakeries that holds onto its roots of hand-making the pastries and using coconut husks to heat up the oven. Those who possess sharp taste buds and appreciate the minor details will surely tell the difference as they do taste significantly better. You'll get that faint smell of coconut which is lacking in those baked in modern electric ovens. With its very limited supply per day, it depends on your luck if you will be able to grab a pack home!
Sam Poh Tong (Cave Temple)
Next stop will be Sam Poh Tong Temple, the oldest cave temple in Ipoh. As you step into the compound, you will be greeted by the serene award winning Chinese style landscape garden with fishes, turtles, and birds probably from the natural limestone hills around! As we head into the cave temple passing through the praying site, there is a hidden courtyard surrounded by mountains with a turtle pond where you can purchase vegetable to feed the hundreds of hungry tortoise and turtles set free by devotees long long time ago.
Kek Lok Tong (Cave Temple)
As a city famous for its cave temples, you surely will not want to pass this chance to visit the magnificent Kek Lok Cave Temple and admire its intricate stalactites & stalagmites. I’m sure you’ll be amazed by the cave, but don’t rush in just yet! Follow your guide for an intro of the cave, letting you know the formation and the creatures hidden around you. Stroll around for some photos and we will head to the next destination.
With an exciting morning, I’m sure you will be dying for a meal. Ipoh is a popular food haven and we have a wide range of different food to choose from. Discuss with your guide for options.
The spooky Kellie's Castle*, an unfinished mansion of an eccentric Scottish planter, will be our last stop. This castle with combined Scottish, Moorish and Indian architecture was built by craftsmen from Madras, India. All the bricks and marble were imported from India. Do follow your guide as there are some little-known facts and hidden secrets lying around which are not shown on the information boards. *Entrance Fees: RM10
