Learn how to play the traditional 24 Festive Drums and get into the rhythm of this truly Malaysian cultural art form.
Drums produce a raw, primitive sound that naturally reminds us of our heartbeat. They can be used to tell a story, unbounded by language, and it is this artistic potential that led to the rise of drum theatre.
Orang Orang Drum Theatre is an ensemble of drummers who combines the art of drumming with theatrical elements such as acting and dancing, creating a new art genre called drum theatre.
In this session, you will learn the basics of drumming, and how to unleash your creativity with the beats of your drum. Once you get familiar, you will be guided by an experienced drummer in a lesson on the 24 festive drums. Created by two Malaysians, the concept of the 24 festive drums represents the cycle of 24 festivals in the lunar calendar, each with their own unique style.
Through the harmonized sound you produce, you can get a sense of Malaysian Chinese culture, one beat at a time.
Drums may be loud, the experience may not be ideal for babies and toddlers. It is best experienced with a friend or partner so do not come alone. Drums are provided for visitors that don't own a drum.
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Avoid skirts and dresses.

The class was so energetic and exhilarating! We tried several basic techniques like harvesting and picking stars, which looked amazing when all of us were finally in sync. I was surprised that under our instructor's guidance we could learn to perform a simple piece within an hour!
