The Xe Pian National Protected Area (NPA), covering over 240,000 hectares in the southern provinces of Champassak and Attapeu, and touching the national border to Cambodia, is one of the most important nature reserves in Laos. It is home to abundant and rare wildlife such as elephant, gaur, Sun bear, Asiatic black bear, and the yellow-cheeked gibbon, and famous for its extensive wetlands (a RAMSAR convention site).
Pakse > Kiet Ngong> Xe Pian National Protected Area
Starts 8.00am Ends 5.00pm - Depart from Pakse by local transportation to Ban Kiet Ngong village at the edge of the Xe Pian NPA : meet our local guide who will give us interesting information about the wildlife in the area, local forest plants and their uses as food supplement and traditional medicine. - Trek starts at this village : walk through forest deep in to the nature reserve and get the chance to see elephants in the jungle not too far from the village - Enjoy a Lao-style picnic lunch along the way - Trek on to the music of many different birds inhabiting the canopy and lower sections of the forest. If we are lucky, we will see monkeys too! - Continue trekking to see the "Big hole" : used in the past by local people to catch wild elephants. - On the loop back to the village, visit the Phou Asa temple on the plateau close to Ban Kiet Ngong. - Return to Pakse Approximately: 1 hours transfer, 4.5 hours trekking
