Follow in the footsteps of a Gopeng native to discover the history behind this 150-year-old town in Perak.
Gopeng, located in Kampar District, was a strategic place where the great tin mining industry of Malaysia once existed before the tin empire collapsed in the 1980s. It is within half an hour away from Ipoh city and two hours away from Kuala Lumpur. Its name is believed to be originated from a Chinese man called Mo Peng (毛兵); however, it was converted into Gopeng as it was believed that the British found the first name difficult to pronounce.
True to its legacy, Gopeng was a place where great notable residents were born or involved in significnt historical events, including Mr. Eu Kong Pui (1853–1892), founder of "Eu Yan Sang"; and Dr Sun Yat Sen (the leader of the historic Chinese revolutionary leader) who stayed in Gopeng briefly from 1909 to 1911.
