The National Mosque of Malaysia, or Masjid Negara, is the country’s national identity of Islam. Located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, this 1960s mosque is the main place of worship for the Malay Muslim community. Spread across 13 acres of elegant architecture and beautiful landscaped gardens, it is inspired by Mecca’s Grand Mosque. The most significant feature of the National Mosque is its umbrella-like roof with blue tiles, with 18 points that symbolise the 13 states of Malaysia and the 5 pillars of Islam. Standing tall above the mosque is the 73m-high minaret, inspired by a folded umbrella and issues the call to prayer across Chinatown. Grand and impressive, the mosque can accommodate 15,000 worshippers. Apart from prayers, the National Mosque also hosts academic activities, official ceremonies, seminars, public lectures and free guided tours. Our National Mosque of Malaysia Virtual Tour is open for viewing, in collaboration with Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia, Islamic Outreach ABIM Centre and Masjid Negara Malaysia. Free live guided tour available in English, Malay and Mandarin. See more:
