Built in 1787, Tokong Mek Temple is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Malaysia. Grand and striking red, it is hard to miss this well-preserved place of worship in Kampung Cina, the earliest Chinese settlement and home to thousands of Chinese families in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Filled with fine antiques and ornamental statues, Tokong Mek is a legacy of cultural harmony and inter-racial acceptance. The antique drum in the temple was a personal gift from the Sultan back then. It has been used during Chap Goh Mei for over 200 years. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy Guan Yin. Today, it is not only used as a place of worship but also a gathering area during important cultural events. The temple was once burned by Japanese troops in 1941, and later rebuilt in 1971.
